• Gymi preparation at porta mundi

  For many students, the entrance examination represents a turning point in their school career, as the examination is held at a very high level, especially in the canton of Zurich. In order to be able to solve the examination tasks with confidence, solid preparation is necessary.

  The pupils are faced with a great challenge, which is difficult to solve without the necessary support. The experience grades of the primary school or the secondary school have a 50 per cent influence on the examination result and therefore the support must not only be based on possible examination tasks, but must be built up in a targeted manner with a focus on the subject matter. The Gymi preparation offered by porta mundi in individual lessons or in small groups ensures that all the material is covered, that the students deepen their knowledge and that they are optimally prepared for the central entrance examination in the canton of Zurich through an intensive preparation period in the subjects German and mathematics.

• Scope of the Gymi exams

  The scope of the Gymi exams is basically based on the profile of the primary school and or secondary school depending on the entry point. Experience shows that the entrance examinations for the Gymi contain various tasks which can only be partly covered by the basic school education. In primary school, therefore, it is not always possible to satisfactorily deepen all the nuances for, for example, passing a successful examination for long-term grammar school. This is particularly evident in the core areas of German with the requirement to write an essay, mathematics in the area of text problems and geometry. Due to known resource problems, all of these areas cannot be guaranteed through standardised basic preparation - for the completion of a successful Gymi examination - by the respective primary schools of the Canton of Zurich. This is therefore also a topic of discussion at numerous information events. However, so far there is no uniform solution for this shortcoming.

• Success at Gymi Exams - How Parents can be Involved

  Another area is contact with parents. Learning only leads to success if the framework conditions at home are also right and the child can build on holistic support for the appropriate preparation - for transfer to secondary school or the Gymi.
  
  Information sessions are available for parents to ensure that the examination is a success. The way to prepare is through a motivating environment that requires close cooperation between teacher, child and parents. Porta mundi provides all relevant information on the exam and covers the entire scope of the material.

• Gymi Preparation - Preparation courses by porta mundi

  Our preparation courses take place in small groups and are based on the company's own course material. In addition, all past exams from the last 15 years are solved together and then discussed in detail with our teachers in order to specifically deepen the child's knowledge. Experience has shown that this in turn is an optimal preparation for the upcoming grammar school exams.

  The preparation period is generally from August to March and the courses take place on a weekly basis. In addition, there is homework for two hours per week. The aim here is also to consolidate existing knowledge and to identify possible subject areas which our trained team of teachers can promote by means of suitable exercises.

  Since the essay, geometry and text tasks always lead to numerous difficulties and often the assessments are extremely strict, porta mundi offers specially designed holiday courses to ensure optimal learning progress in this school discipline as well.

  Upon request, our teachers also exchange information with the class teachers to ensure that the experience grades for the examination also correspond to the required level. Because only a holistic preparation leads to success and that is exactly where porta mundi comes in with its wide range of courses!

• Which benefits does a degree at the gymnasium offer my child?

  Every successful completion of the Gymnasium leads to the Matura and thus to university or college entrance qualification. In the long Gymnasium, children learn two more years of Latin, which is omitted in the short Gymnasium. The central requirements are based on the Zurich curriculum for primary or secondary school.

• How important are the previous grades received by my child?

  Basically, the preliminary marks of your child's school count for 50 per cent and therefore, as a rule, only the best students are admitted to internal remedial courses for optimal preparation for grammar school as part of basic school education. The preparatory courses usually take place in a larger class group, which prevents the individual needs of the pupils from being specifically addressed. As a result, students learn in a rather suboptimal environment and the public preparation for the Gymi examination is usually characterised by a lower sense of achievement.

  With us, however, your child will receive exactly the attention and support it needs. Porta mundi ensures that the child receives targeted support with regard to the subject matter on the one hand, but on the other hand can also be comprehensively and precisely prepared for the numerous examination situations of the grammar school entrance examination.

• Difference long-term gymnasium and short-term gymnasium

  In the canton of Zurich, children can attend both the long gymi school and the short grammar school. The long gymi school lasts six years and the transfer to the grammar schools takes place after passing the sixth grade of primary school. Whereas the Kurzgymnasium, on the other hand, lasts only four years and the corresponding entrance examinations for admission to one of Zurich's renowned gymnasiums are only taken in the second or third secondary school.

• What is tested in the Gymi examination?

  The subjects tested are German and mathematics. In German, the focus is on the use of correct grammar, text comprehension and the preparation of an essay. In the next examination discipline, the participating children are expected to have a perfect command of the material covered in primary school or secondary school in order to ensure a successful transfer to the Zurich Gymi. As experience shows that these examination disciplines are not always trivial, targeted tutoring is recommended for a successive (step-by-step) build-up of your child's knowledge, which will contribute to success in examinations in the long term.

• Preliminary grades for the Langgymnasium

  In the Langgymnasium, the most recent grades achieved in the subjects German and Mathematics count as preliminary grades if you are taking the examination from a public primary school in the Canton of Zurich. In order to pass the entrance examination in this way, a grade point average of 4.75 is required.

• Entrance examination at the level of private school

  If the entrance examination is taken after attending a public school in the canton of Zurich, the same school material preparation is required, but only a grade point average of 4.5 must be achieved in this variant. Furthermore, in the case of a possible transfer from a public school in Zurich, the possibility of good preliminary grades, which could possibly have a positive effect on the overall result of the examination, is excluded for the sake of fairness.

• Entrance exams starting at secondary school level

  In the short gymnasium there are some important sub-areas that need to be taken into account which clearly distinguish it from the long gymnasium in terms of the actual examination and preliminary grades.

  If the child attends the public secondary school of the Canton of Zurich, the experience grades of the subjects German, Mathematics, French, English and Nature and Technology are included in the evaluation and thus form the preliminary grade for the upcoming entrance examination of your child.

  However, this is only the case if the child attends Level I in all relevant areas. Here, an overall average of 4.75 must be achieved. If the experience grades of the Sek are not recognised, pupils pass the examination with an overall grade of 4.5.

  As places are limited, the lessons can be individualised. It is also possible for the students to work on individual deficits in additional private tuition and thus have a better chance of succeeding in the grammar school examinations. • French still relevant from entrance at secondary school level?

  The linguistic competence in French as a foreign language will no longer be tested in the entrance examination from secondary level onwards as of 2023. However, it must also be noted here that, as in English, the experience mark is counted as a preliminary mark towards the overall result.

• Entrance examination - Gymiprüfungen

  The central entrance examination takes place at the beginning of March. Successful completion of the entrance examination gives your child the opportunity to transfer to any public grammar school in the Canton of Zurich.

  The structure of all grammar school examinations is cantonally regulated and therefore uniform. This is why porta mundi offers the ideal preparation for your child's future, regardless of whether it is for a long-term or short-term Gymnasium in the Canton of Zurich.
