Every successful completion of the Gymnasium leads to the Matura and thus to university or college entrance qualification. In the long Gymnasium, children learn two more years of Latin, which is omitted in the short Gymnasium. The central requirements are based on the Zurich curriculum for primary or secondary school.

Basically, the preliminary marks of your child's school count for 50 per cent and therefore, as a rule, only the best students are admitted to internal remedial courses for optimal preparation for grammar school as part of basic school education. The preparatory courses usually take place in a larger class group, which prevents the individual needs of the pupils from being specifically addressed. As a result, students learn in a rather suboptimal environment and the public preparation for the Gymi examination is usually characterised by a lower sense of achievement.

In the canton of Zurich, children can attend both the long gymi school and the short grammar school. The long gymi school lasts six years and the transfer to the grammar schools takes place after passing the sixth grade of primary school. Whereas the Kurzgymnasium, on the other hand, lasts only four years and the corresponding entrance examinations for admission to one of Zurich's renowned gymnasiums are only taken in the second or third secondary school.

The subjects tested are German and mathematics. In German, the focus is on the use of correct grammar, text comprehension and the preparation of an essay. In the next examination discipline, the participating children are expected to have a perfect command of the material covered in primary school or secondary school in order to ensure a successful transfer to the Zurich Gymi. As experience shows that these examination disciplines are not always trivial, targeted tutoring is recommended for a successive (step-by-step) build-up of your child's knowledge, which will contribute to success in examinations in the long term.

In the Langgymnasium, the most recent grades achieved in the subjects German and Mathematics count as preliminary grades if you are taking the examination from a public primary school in the Canton of Zurich. In order to pass the entrance examination in this way, a grade point average of 4.75 is required.

If the entrance examination is taken after attending a public school in the canton of Zurich, the same school material preparation is required, but only a grade point average of 4.5 must be achieved in this variant. Furthermore, in the case of a possible transfer from a public school in Zurich, the possibility of good preliminary grades, which could possibly have a positive effect on the overall result of the examination, is excluded for the sake of fairness.

In the short gymnasium there are some important sub-areas that need to be taken into account which clearly distinguish it from the long gymnasium in terms of the actual examination and preliminary grades.

If the child attends the public secondary school of the Canton of Zurich, the experience grades of the subjects German, Mathematics, French, English and Nature and Technology are included in the evaluation and thus form the preliminary grade for the upcoming entrance examination of your child.

However, this is only the case if the child attends Level I in all relevant areas. Here, an overall average of 4.75 must be achieved. If the experience grades of the Sek are not recognised, pupils pass the examination with an overall grade of 4.5.

As places are limited, the lessons can be individualised. It is also possible for the students to work on individual deficits in additional private tuition and thus have a better chance of succeeding in the grammar school examinations. The linguistic competence in French as a foreign language will no longer be tested in the entrance examination from secondary level onwards as of 2023. However, it must also be noted here that, as in English, the experience mark is counted as a preliminary mark towards the overall result.

The central entrance examination takes place at the beginning of March. Successful completion of the entrance examination gives your child the opportunity to transfer to any public grammar school in the Canton of Zurich.
